How to Make a Wooden Mosaic Bookmark from Scrap Wood

Woodworking often leaves us with small pieces of scrap wood — why not turn those leftovers into something meaningful? This step-by-step guide shows you how to create a beautiful mosaic-style wooden bookmark, perfect for Father's Day or any special occasion.
What You'll Need
- Assorted Wood Scraps: Choose pieces with interesting colors and grains.
- Wood glue
- Masking tape
- Mini Hand Plane: Kakuri's Flat Sole 24mm is a great pick
- Fine-Toothed Saw: Like Our Sakura Handle Dozuki Saw 210mm
- Sandpaper: Medium to fine grits.
- Beeswax
The Creation Process: Step by Step
1. Cut the Scrap Wood into Thin Strips
Start by sawing your scrap wood into thin strips, about 3mm thick. For this delicate work, a saw with a thin, fine blade—like a dozuki saw—is ideal. It helps ensure clean, precise cuts.
2. Arrange Your Pattern
Lay out the strips in the pattern you want for your bookmark. Take a photo of the arrangement before gluing, so you don't lose track of your design.

3. Glue the Pieces Together
Carefully apply wood glue to join the strips. To protect your work surface, place masking tape underneath the pieces before gluing.

4. Flatten the Surface
Once the glue is fully dry, smooth out the surface. Begin by gently leveling any high spots or uneven edges with a mini hand plane.

5. Sand for a Smooth Finish
Use coarse sandpaper to flatten the surface and adjust the thickness to your liking. Then switch to fine-grit sandpaper to refine and polish the surface until it feels silky smooth.

6. Apply a Coat of Beeswax
Finally, rub beeswax into the wood to protect the surface and enhance the natural colors and grain of the wood.

Done!

Pro Tip from the Kakuri Workshop
Initially, I planned to shape the bookmark into a perfect rectangle. But I found the natural, raw feel of the glued wood pieces appealing and decided to keep it simple. This hands-on approach, adjusting as you go, captures the true spirit of DIY woodworking and makes the process even more rewarding.
