How to Make a Kirie Wooden Bookmark from Scrap Wood & Paper

Small pieces of scrap wood can be transformed into something truly special. This guide walks you through making a delicate kirie-style wooden bookmark—combining precise carving with colorful paper accents—for a thoughtful Father's Day gift or personal keepsake.
What You'll Need
- Thin wood scraps
-
Wood carving knives: Our Wood Carving Knife Set - Aogami (Blue Paper Steel) #2 - 5 Pcs works great for this project.
- Colored paper in your favorite shades
-
Saw: Such as the Spare Blade for our Sakura Handle Dozuki Saw 210mm
- Hand plane
- Thin leather scrap: For backing the bookmark
- Cord or string
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Strong adhesive/glue
- Double-sided tape
-
Gimlet: Such as the Kakuri Straight Type 3mm
The Creation Process: Step by Step
1. Draw Your Design
Start by sketching your desired pattern onto a thin piece of wood. This design will guide your carving.

2. Carve Out the Pattern
Use carving knives to carefully remove the unwanted wood, cutting out the intricate shapes of your design.

3. Add Color
To bring your pattern to life, attach colored paper to the back of the carved wood where you've cut through. This adds vibrant contrast.

4. Create Decorative Accents
Cut thin pieces of scrap wood with your saw and carving knives to form small shapes like hearts. Attach these to your bookmark for added detail.

5. Shape the Bookmark
Cut your bookmark to the desired length using the saw. Then, smooth and level the edges with a hand plane. Attach a leather backing using adhesive to give it a refined finish.

6. Add the Finishing Touch
Punch a hole at the top of your bookmark and thread a cord or ribbon through it. Tie a neat bow to complete your creation.

Done!

Pro Tip from the Kakuri Workshop
Perfection isn't the goal here. Handmade work carries a unique beauty in its imperfections and the freedom to follow where your hands and heart lead. When I began this project, the only plan was a "Mount Fuji" theme. Everything else—the length of the bookmark, the shapes of the clouds, the heart-shaped decorations, even the ribbon tied at the end—came from moments of inspiration as I worked.
This process of allowing ideas to emerge naturally, without rigid constraints, is at the heart of what makes crafting so fulfilling. The imperfect moments, the unexpected changes, and the personal touches all add character and meaning to the finished piece. For me, creating is about embracing this freedom—the quiet joy of expressing yourself without limits. It's these moments of creative flow that make handmade projects deeply rewarding and uniquely yours.
